Is having less than an hour between flights enough time?
I am going from Hartford to Phoenix on Continental in January with a change over in Cleveland. On both the outgoing and return flights, I have less than an hour between flights. I will be using Continental on all legs of flight. Will I have enough time to disembark one plane and go on the other plane? If the plane is late and I miss my connection, what am I supposed to do?

Probably, unless your first flight is running late!

Depending on the size of the airport, you should be okay. If your flight runs late then you will have to reschedule the next leg with the airline customer service. It happened to me once in Salt Lake City. Plane from LA was late and they didn't hold the connector flight. They got me a new flight, but I had to spend the night in town, which the airline paid for as well as meals.

Cleveland is not the biggest of airports. The minimum connection time in Cleveland is probably half an hour. It shouldn't be less than that. You should be fine. If the flight is late and you do not make the connection they will put you on their next flight if it is available. If not, they may put you on another airline or overnight you for the next available flight to your destination.

How much less than an hour? Fifty five minutes may be fine. Thirty five minutes would make me sweat. It will probably be okay, but you might be cutting it a bit close. There are a lot of flight delays these days and you have to consider the possibility of bad weather. If your departure is late by more than a couple of minutes, you may have an interesting trip. If you miss your connection, go to the nearest airline service desk. They will book you on the next available flight. I always try to leave a minimum of an hour and preferably 1.5 hours. It's much easier on my blood pressure!

LOL Last year, I was supposed to get a flight from Stockholm, Sweden to Calgary via Iceland and Minneapolis. The airport in Stockholm lost its radar for four hours, so we totally missed the flight from Iceland to Minnesota. Instead, we had to go from Iceland to SAN FRANCISCO in one LONG flight and stay the night (airline paid for the hotel). We got to our hotel in San Fran around midnight and had to be up at 6 am to catch the flight to Calgary. That was a headache. But it's kind of funny now. LOL

An hour is NOT enough time. If you miss the connection, the airline will attempt to rebook you on another flight.

If you're on the same airline, you'll be checked all the way through and simply have to change gates. If the first flight is on time, you might have more than an hour. Airlines usually "pad" their schedules. If you want peace of mind, look up Continental's schedule and see how many Cleveland to Phoenix and Cleveland to Hartford flights they have per day. http://timetable.continental.com/siteb/co.pdf If your first flight is delayed, the ground agents in Cleveland will probably automatically book you on the next flight. When you get to the desk, they might simply inform you or listen carefully at arrival in case they page you. When we were delayed (I worked for another two airlines), they often wired us with the list of who was rebooked on which or had that information on arrival. Chances are too, that these are not big aircraft and disembarking will be quick. My guess is that Cleveland is used to this and has it's act together. Please don't be too concerned.

According to my research, you must have a minimum of 45 minutes to make connection. There is a risk though. There may be flight delays etc. If you miss the connection,go to the Continental Airline Counter and they may put you on the next flight. However, 45 minutes is very rushy, for me, I make sure that the connection is at least 1.5 hrs. Wish you all the best for your flight.
