Whether they serve food depends on the airline, class of service, length of flight segment, and time of day. But yes, you can bring food from home. Just mind the rules on liquids. (see tsa.gov)

I do and take a flask of hot water to make tea. I am not paying a £1, for a cup of sludge when I can make my own.

Sure, specially on most of cheapskate airlines I fly on, ok? Few months ago, I take a flite from Vegas to Fort Lauderdale, on Southwest, you know they don't give you nothing to eat, ok? so just before boarding, guy next to me say he going to get his sandwich from Subway, which in the terminal, he telling me they make lotta sandwiches for flite, cause it non-stop, and 4 + hours, so I go with him, get me sandwich, take it on plane, steward say no problem, so bout ova grand canyon, EVABODY get out their sandwich, and I tell you place smell like a deli, ok? We eat, I trade 1/2 of my sandwich with otha guy for his, one lady have onion, pepper, salami sub, I tell you we had great time, but plane smelled like school cafeteria for awhile, I tell you, ok? So yeah, bring from home or buy in terminal, no problem cause hey, you gotta eat, ok? And airline not got anything to eat, yeah? Next time, I gonna bring some poi chips from home, cause they the finest kind snack food, YEAH? Peace and aloha to you from Hawaii!
