Is 2 hours enough time to transfer flights at JFK?
I'm flying into JFK from Zurich in Jan. and my flight lands at 1 PM. I need to make a connecting flight back to Cleveland that same day... should I book the flight for 3:15 or 8:50? I can save 25 dollars if I book the earlier flight but I'm not sure if that will be enough time to transfer after going through customs and re-checking my bags in.

I recently went through JFK on the way to and from Moscow. To Moscow it was less then 2 hours, but the transfer was inside Delta terminal (still, the distances are huge!) and I had some time to spare. On the way back, it was 3 hours and I had to wait and wait and wait...so my guess 2 hours will be ok if your flight will land with no delays and the customs/etc will be smooth. On the way back I went through customs' routine and it was slo-ow. Still, I had time to stare into the walls. Just my 5¢.

I would think that a 2 hour connection should be enough time assuming that there are not a lot of international flights arriving at the same time. Another consideration is how familiar you are with the airport and whether or not you are flying the same airline into Cleveland or if you have to go to another terminal to catch your connecting flight. But I still think 2 hours should be enough time. Waiting over 7 hours at the airport can be pretty tough. I have done that before.

2 hours is normally enough for "in-transit"

No it is not. I have often taken flights at JFK and many times something came up, too many passengers and the queue was long. Not with checking your bags, no way. If your bags are the last one to come ? NO. $ 25 dollars is not worth the troubles.
