How long would it take to fly from Cleveland, OH to Perth, Western Australia

How long would it take to fly from Cleveland, OH to Perth, Western Australia?
I'm writing a story, and in the story the family leaves Cleveland around 5AM, on a flight to Perth, WA Australia. How long woud that take? I need to know, so I can add up the extra mini flight (about an hour and a half) to a smaller town from there, and figure out what time it would be in Australia apon their arrival. Could someone help me out, here, and tell me what time in Australia they would arrive in Perth? I'm confused, because the time difference between Ohio & Australia is really big.

I don't know about leaving CLE that early in the morning for a flight to Perth, but if you go onto Kayak or Mobissimo to look at sample schedules you'll find that it's a 11,587 mile trip and takes about two days. If you were to leave today March 4, 2010 from CLE at 4:18 pm on United, you will change planes at O'Hare in Chicago to fly to LAX where you pick up a Qantas B747 to fly non-stop to Sydney where you change planes again to arrive in Perth on March 6 at 12:05 p.m. local time. Generally these west bound trips from Cleveland to Perth take between 29 and 34 hours of travel time including connecting time at intermediate airports. You can find some cheap round trip flights under $2,000 per person on some discount travel sites. But to be real, if a family is making this trip, everyone will be totally exhausted unless you spend a day or two at a stop over on the way.

Well I doubt the family would leave at 5am from Cleveland as from memory most flights to Australia leave in the evening from LA or San Francisco so they arrive in Australia first thing in the morning. They would probably leave at around midday-2ish depending how long it takes to get to LA or San Fran. This trip will take between 30-36 hours depending on connections taken and while the other person says families wouldn't do this in one go I have to disagree as most people will do this without a stopover. Particularly families as I think they like to get it out of the way without dragging it out over more days than necessary. Check Qantas.com.au for schedules which will help you out. They will also give flight durations.

You are looking at a very long flight. I wouldn't be surprised if the flight alone was under 30 hours. If you have a choice, take connecting flights so all can rest up. Cleveland to LA. LA to Mexico City, to somewhere in eastern South America then to Perth. Be aware also of not only the time change, but the season change. Their season is the exact opposite of ours. We are entering Spring now and they are entering into, or are already into, Fall. Leaving 5 in the morning would put you in LA about noon LA time. Another 4 hours to Mexico City (if not direct flight) Otherwise it will be well after dark when your family arrives in Perth. I doubt very much there is a plane capable of flying non-stop anyway because of fuel capacity. The long range Airbus A321 can only fly about 6 to 7 hours if I'm not mistaken.

The apparent big time difference is because you cross the international date line when you travel across the Pacific. When flying from Australia to America (West to East) a person usually arrives in America on the same date that they departed from Australia. When flying from America to Australia (East to West) a person usually arrives on a date two days after the one on which they departed. The flying time is the same in either direction. Total travel time will vary according to route and stops but the fastest journey would be about 21 hours Ohio to East coast Australia plus about 5 hours more to Perth on the West Coast.
